Indian Cities Progressing Towards Net Zero
At present, cities of the world are home to more than 50% of the global population contributing to 70% of global CO2 emissions yet covering only about 3% of the earth land surface. This will further increase with growing urbanization resulting into about 70% of world population residing in cities by 2050, leading to even higher emissions in business-as-usual scenario. This makes cities "main cause of the climate change" yet central to the solutions in fight against the climate change and achieving the net-zero future goals.
In recent years many countries including most of the South Asia countries have put forth ambitious plans to cut down emissions and achieving 'net-zero'. India too has declared to bring down carbon intensity of its economy by more than 45% by 2030 and becoming 'net-zero' by 2070 in the recently concluded COP 26 at Glasgow. In the given context where fast and rapid decarbonization needs to occur, cities have a leading role to play. India has been one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Much of this growth has been driven by more than 4400 cities and towns, contributing to 63% of the country's GDP, which is estimated to reach to 75% by 2030. This highlights that cities are vital to economic growth for the developing nations like India. Therefore, there is a need to adopt a balanced approach between economic development and controlling carbon emissions while aiming towards net-zero cities. The efforts must also be given for achievement of sustainable development goals for the citizens living in such cities.
USAID through its five-year South Asia Regional Energy Partnership (SAREP) is providing technical assistance to cities on clean energy. There have been several sector specific programs from the government, also supported by international development organizations in the past to enhance sustainability measures in the cities. There have also been city wide plans developed on climate change, energy efficiency, or green electricity supply. SAREP's technical assistance to cities is aimed at quick start of the implementation process and taking cities on the trajectory of becoming future 'net-zero energy'. The priority sectors will be on renewable energy, energy efficiency, electric vehicles, and waste to energy with focus on new implementation approaches and business models, demonstration, financing mechanisms, capacity building, network of cities, private sector engagement, etc.
Objectives
The objective of this event will be to discuss the following
- What discourse cities can take to be net zero?
- Which sectors can be prioritized for net zero?
- Which interventions (technology, regulatory, implementation models) successful elsewhere can be prioritized for quick start of the implementation?
- What are the tools, experience, and best practices available for cross-learning between cities?

Women Empowering the Cleantech Decade
Goals & Objectives:
The Session will focus on Womens participation in forming the green energy landscape with adoption of new technologies in the CleanTech space.
Women are the mainstream users and often producers of energy and without their involvement, renewable energy projects risk being inappropriate, and failing.
Women are also the main users of household energy in developing and industrial countries; they influence or make many family purchases related to energy; they are experienced entrepreneurs in energy-related enterprises; and women within organizations are effective promoters of new technologies and active lobbyists for environmentally benign energy sources.
Innovation is one of the main challenges in the CleanTech Industry, and Women could be the key to a new idea and different way of thinking. With technology constantly improving, its essential to consider new ways of optimizing the infrastructure and monitoring the energy.
While women do experience a number of constraints in their involvement with technology, the reality is that their role in technology has been largely overlooked. Achievement, Success, Accomplishment, Attainment, Competence. These are all terms associated with breaking barriers and propelling through the glass ceiling.
The future I green and it has to be created equally by Women and Men on this planet. Lets build this Green Future Today, Together as #TogetherWeAreStronger.

Decarbonization of Rail Transport in India
Rail transport plays a key role in global transport accounting for about 8% of passenger movement and 9% in freight. It is one of the most energy-efficient and among the lowest carbon-intensive way of mobility. Countries are increasingly planning a modal shift to rail transport to reduce transport sector emissions and increase cost competitiveness of freight transport. Moreover, to further reduce the emission footprint and become energy self-sufficient, several rail operators across the globe are undertaking sustainable energy initiatives and aspiring for future net zero.
The rail operators and rail infrastructure management companies are taking "avoid-shift-improve" approaches to become net zero. Transitioning away from the use of petroleum fuels, utilization of green electricity, and optimization of demand through energy efficiency are common actions across railways globally in this pursuit. Several countries have also begun to deploy hydrogen trains or have announced plans to do so soon. The rail companies in India are setting a benchmark on decarbonization. Indian Railways, the world's largest rail network with a span of over 68,000 kms and over 1.2 million employees have set a target to become Net Zero by 2030 thereby avoiding annual emissions of 60 million tons. To achieve emission reduction, Indian Railways is taking several initiatives for energy demand management, shift from diesel to electricity, greening of electricity supply, and offsetting emissions. USAID's South Asia Regional Energy Partnership (SAREP) is assisting Indian Railways in its decarbonization vision by supporting energy efficiency, renewable procurement and planning, solar rooftop deployment, and clean energy financing.
The urban metro rail companies and regional rapid transit systems are not far behind with green rating systems and onsite renewable generation being increasingly adopted in new construction. The decarbonization of rail transport presents immense opportunities for new technologies and solutions for electricity generation, load balancing, and energy efficiency improvement.
Objectives
The objective of this event include:
- Indian Railways ambition to attain net-zero carbon emissions by 2030
- Highlight technology solutions and new innovations for decarbonization of rail transport

Business Opportunities for AgriPV in India
Agriculture serves as the backbone of India. Bringing innovation and applying emerging technologies is one of the crucial goals for agritechnology projects in India. In the past few years, the Government of India has started emphasising and commercialising agriculture in innovative ways like Agriphotovoltaic (AgriPV). The large - scale combination of agriculture under photovoltaic systems seems promising. According to a study by the German research institute Fraunhofer, just 1% of India's agricultural land would suffice to install around 630 GW of additional photovoltaic capacity using so-called agrivoltaics.
This session brings together international and national experts to discuss recent developments in India and Europe and gives an insight into this promising market segment.
Key Questions/Discussion points
- Agrivoltaics scenario in India and on an international level.
- Potential business cases?
- Implications for the solar developer as well as on farming practices?
- Which agrivoltaic plants have been commissioned lately?

Energy Storage for C&I Sector in India
Session Objective:
Indian large-scale storage market is at exponential growth phase with multiple announcements and deployments. There are more than 500 MW of energy storage capacity at installed or installation stage in India. There are multiple energy storage projects have been commssioned for commercial and industrial customers. Several businesses are now utilising renewable energy storage systems as a backup for their industry or building in order to ensure quality and continuous power supply
The energy storage system will be used to address four major issues:
- Solving power quality and reliability issues to avoid revenue loss due to interrupted manufacturing
- Reducing diesel consumption, by adopting Advanced Energy Storage as a back - up
- . Developing Rooftop Solar + Energy Storage to supply evening peak power
- Energy cost savings through open access & energy storage Energy storage deployment in the C&I sector also needs less policy intervention. With an appropriate business case, the sector can grow to 30-50 GWh by 2030. Hotels, resorts, hospitals (all critical infrastructure), shopping malls, multiplexes, and batch - manufacturing industries like textiles, plastics, foundries, and steel industries will be the early adopters for this segment.
